The ITER project
at the European Parliament

The Permanent Representation
of the Federal Republic of Germany to
the European Union in Brussels,
supported by the General Direction for Research in Cultural
Heritage, has organized an Exhibition from 31st January up
to 4th February 2005 in the European Parliament.
Under the Patronage of MEP Martin
Schulz, the results of 2 research Projects supported by the
European Commission were presented.
- ITER, dealing with the analysis and documentation
in an internet database, as well as the reproduction of
original Roman mortars- (FUTUREtec
GmbH in Bergisch Gladbach).
- INCOR, dealing with the conservation of
old books and paper - (Zentrum für Bestandserhaltung
GmbH in Leipzig).
Entwicklungsgesellschaft Zollverein
Essen presented the structural change of the UNESCO World
Heritage Site Zeche Zollverein from an industrial
complex into an international center of business, design and
culture.
The objective of the exhibition
was to raise awareness among the European parliamentarians
on the importance to support research and development in such
an interdisciplinary field that is important for society:
Cultural Heritage.
The exhibition was opened by the vice-president of the European
Parliament, Dagmar Roth-Behrendt, Ambassador Dr. Wilhelm Schönfelder,
Permanent Representative of the Federal Republic of Germany
and Manfred Morgenstern, State Secretary of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Among the guests attending,
were parliamentarians, representatives of several directions
of the European Commission (DG Research, DG SME Unit, DG INFOS,
DG eTEN, DG Enterprise, COST Action, EURAB), industry (e.g.
IBM, Daimler Chrysler) and also interested guests coming from
many European countries (e.g. Princess Heide von Hohenzollern,
the Italian General Consul Bernardino Mancini, Prof. Günter
Schmid and Dr. Klaus Seyfried, vice president of InGentibus
Foundation e.V.).
Scholars of the Essen Musikhochschule Folkwang made an excellent
contribution with classical and modern music.
During the whole week,
the ITER project was represented by FUTUREtec
(Ing. Andrei Druta and Dr. Caterina Rehm-Berbenni) and by
LVR - Landschaftsverband Rheinland, Archaeological Park Xanten
(Dr. Peter Kienzle), who had the opportunity to speak with
numerous parliamentarians and interested people raising awareness
on the results and success of the work done by the ITER consortium.
